A Much Needed Walkabout
The Whither Hills boarder the Waipara Valley in the Marlborough region to the south.
They were carved by glaciers and had their contours revealed when humans settled the area, hunting moa and establishing agriculture.
The upper level of the winery we worked at in Marlborough provided panoramic views of the hills- enabling us to watch the light change their shapes throughout the day.
After months of working nightshift during harvest, and consequently developing a serious vitamin D deficiency,
a sunny day in May presented an opportunity to get up close and personal with the Wither Hills.
We stuffed our backpacks with timeless hiking essentials
-dates, cheese, and those single-serve mini wine bottles-
and wandered the cow trails we had spent countless hours admiring from inside the winery.
